All songs by Brett Winterford.

The Wildes Meadow Band is Syd Green (drums and slide guitar), Mark Holbert (bass), and Matt Tonks (guitars and backing vocals).
Josh Schuberth plays mostly everything on ‘Middle Australia” and something or other on every song.
Stu Hunter plays piano and Hammond Organ on ‘”How To Feel”, ”Jumbo Jet”, “Middle Australia”, “The Sciences’, and “Empathy”.
Brian Campeau tampered with “Alles Klar” and “The Hardest Part”.
Kent Eastwood plays piano on “I want to be proud to be a man”.

This record required a lot of love from a lot of people to find its way into the world. A massive thanks to Josh and Syd for bring it all together, and to Kara for constant reassurance.

The Wildes Meadow Band project was made possible by the generosity of a number of spirited people whom I can’t thank enough.

Eternal gratitude to Nat Swainston, to Gerrad and Brodie, Peter Bowron, Terry Hamilton, Arjun Ramachandran, Julian Hill, Brendon Chase, Carol Harper, Mark Oliver, Clare Watts, Penny Wolf, John Swainston, Joseph Lucas, Baden, Munir Kotadia, Alan Perkins and Olive Andrews for giving so much and expecting so little in return.

And a heartfelt thanks to:

Track Name: The Hardest Part
We must be past the hardest part
I came home to boxes of your things
You're strong enough to make a start
And I can't hurt much more than this

We grew a lot together
I'm better for it and I know
We might be through forever
I'll take the bruises as a sign we made a mark
We must be past the hardest part

We must be past the hardest part
I saw that photo on the fridge
You looked so happy in that dress
I think I'll leave it where it is
We talked about our love that night in reverential tones
Had anybody noticed that you already stood the smallest bit apart?
We must be past the hardest part

We must be past the hardest part
You're stepping one foot out the door
I'm puffing out my chin and chest
And slowly sinking through the floor

Now I'll be true to who I was before I met you
We say we'll stay ourselves, but often we forget to
There's still some part of you that no one else can get to
Your impenetrable heart
We must be past the hardest part
Track Name: Empathy
I'd like to speak in defence of empathy
In its final hour
It has served us well ‘til now

Just a few words in defence of empathy
See it off in style
Speak for those not speaking out

Look now on the sunburned ones, [privileged]
Born of broad arrow and an ochre sun
Come all you brilliant bastard sons, in light of what we've been through
We would naturally feel the earth beneath someone else's shoes

I will best remember empathy
The fashion of our kind
Every fashion has its time

So lay to rest our old friend empathy
As my hope expires
Light a candle, light a fire

Look now on the ones privileged
Born of broad arrow and an ochre sun
Come all you brilliant bastard sons, in light of what we've been through
We would naturally feel the earth beneath someone else's shoes

I’d like to keep my faith in empathy
Dormant though it lies

I'd like to keep my faith in empathy
Should the day arrive it will erupt once more and thrive
As it has in days gone by
In a more enlightened time
Track Name: How to Feel
If you're choking on your soldiers
If you're drowning in your tea
When your anchor crosses over to trouble overseas

They used to say you were susceptible to episodes of sensitivity
Like it was some sort of disease
Let's call it what it is now
You still remember how to feel

We are evolving as a species
We are converging with machines
More predictable performers
With more predictable dreams

They used to say you were susceptible
To stepping back and asking what it means
Like it was some sort of disease...
Let's call it what it is now
You still remember how to feel

If you're not choking on your soldiers
I'd you're not drowning in your tea
Because you're choosing to ignore it
Because you're busy

Well, busy bee, are you replaceable?
There’s plenty more of you and me
You might want to seek the counsel
Of someone who remembers how to feel
Remembers how to feel
Track Name: Alles Klar
The baton swings down
A finger is pinched
The horsehair rears up from the strings

If only for a frozen moment
Impossibly we're nothing
We’re weightless
We're suspended

My waking thought is how perfectly shaped
The small bead of sweat on your the corner of your lip
Slowly into focus
How long did we hold it?
Seconds, could be hours

When you’re near enough?
All is clear
Alles klar my darling
Alles klar

I'll take my cue now before the bow crashes down
Do hold me tightly
The expectant sail
The heavens exhale
Track Name: In Our Wellingtons
You can bet the farm on warm Decembers and depend on February stars
And be sure the odds are in your favour in a Sydney March

If the rain should fall on the day we set, I’m OK with it
I will marry you in our Sunday best
In our wellingtons.

We’ll be white against the black umbrellas
We’ll parade on through the parks
And when your make-up runs I’ll fingerpaint our names in hearts upon our arms

If the rain should fall on the day we set, I’m OK with it
I will marry you in our Sunday best
In our wellingtons.

You can curse the clouds, you can pray for sun
Or you can wait for it.
I would rather marry you at the first chance I get
Even in our wellingtons.
Track Name: The Sciences
It's too big, too hard, too hard to compute it
It's too big, too hard, too bigger number to hold
So I think somehow the dice must be loaded
We narrow the odds in the cold dark of night
You and I

Its outside all comprehension
It comes in spite of all we've been told
Told for a lifetime
Mastering cause and effect
We narrow the odds in the cold dark of night
You and I

If we're smart, then we recognise what this fire is
If we're smart, we're clever enough to leave science to scientists
Let's spend the night making love

Raise a glass, raise a toast to the mathematicians
Here's to physics, let's get with it.
Let's turn down the lights
And to chemists:
If men offer women complementary elements
We're out to prove it tonight
You and I

One day we will go there together
One day, when our numbers come through
Still it's ok. It’s ok to say we got lucky, and such
I thank my lucky stars I met you
I'm glad I met you
Track Name: Jumbo Jet
The fog is low tonight
I'll be wired up like Christmas lights
Through the eye of the storm me and my
flourescents on,
Courage! Guide these great machines out of the night!

I'm the guy in the vest
Cold and hopelessly wet
I throw my stupid hands in the air
Like I can land a jumbo jet

Oh no you’ll never know at the time
If the tower was down, if the pilot was blind
Would my dance in the dark be enough
As you dropped from the sky?
Could a fool such as I slow you down in time?

Who am I trying to kid?
Who am I out to impress?
How is my dance gonna bring you in to land?
Track Name: End of Shame
They’ll try and shame you for questioning things before you dive in
When proving them incorrect proves you’re not listening!
And they’ll shame you when you pick up the thread
When you dare to read their foolish words back to them
It’s a shame they can’t think for themselves

They’ll try and shame you for helping yourself
Lest we forget the gaping wide hole in the fence
They will scare you, conjuring dire consequence
Should you go there - go deep in your mind, go out of your head
It’s a shame they can’t think for themselves

This is the end of shame
Bury it good, never to be born again
Track Name: Middle Australia
Yeah well if my straight friends knew what I once did
And if the wild ones knew, they've forgotten it
I learned how to fit in so well I slipped through

Yeah I've seen enough to know my right from left
Hey Mr Fickle, take your pick of what's said best
Today I'm gonna picket, tomorrow take a cheque

It's lonely out on the middle ground
Being the odd one out, on the middle ground
This fence line is strong and true
Enough to turn my sittin’ bones blue
It's lonely out here without you

Yeah, I'm always gonna advocate for what sounds fair
But I'll swivel back if it takes me getting off my chair
I vacillate that much, I'm easy to predict
And easy to forget
Track Name: (I Want To Be Proud) To Be A Man
When doors are opened ahead of strangers and the prams are carried up the stairs
Sprung unaware that you're staring softly at her,
There are some occasions when
It feels good to be a man

And when her tasks are piling up around her
And all she asks of you is your ear
As if your audience alone can make her troubles disappear
There are some occasions when
It feels good to be a man

Don't let her down boy
I want to be proud to be a man

When you've landed some unfair advantage
And you choose to show restraint
When you accept you're the only competition in your way
There are still occasions left
To show that you're a man

When you're asked to make hard decisions
When you take hard decisions on the chin
When you accept that a compromise is better than a win
They're the rare occasions when
You should be proud to be a man

Don't let us down boys, I want to be proud to be a man

And when you rest in the small hours
When you're silent and you're still
You catch her smile, she's studying you lost within yourself

There are some days you can't tell
That men around the world are failing us
Over power and for pride and for prejudice
They make it that much harder for the rest of us
The rest of us still doing what we can

Don't let us down boys I wanna be proud to be a man
